After more than a decade of designing Tanzania safaris from our office in Arusha, the single most useful thing I can tell you is this: there is no such thing as a universal "best" itinerary. There is only the itinerary that fits you — your dates, your budget, your energy, and what you actually want to see. What follows are the itineraries we build over and over again, the ones that work almost every time, refined by real feedback from real travelers.
I've laid them out by length first (5, 7, 10, 14 days), then by traveler type (first-timer, family, couple, luxury, photographer), and finally by combination (safari and Zanzibar). Use it as a menu. How to Choose the Right Tanzania Safari Itinerary
Before you fall in love with a specific route, it helps to answer four questions honestly. These are the same four we ask on every planning call:
1. How many nights do you actually have on the ground? Not counting international travel days. If you land at 9 p.m. on a Wednesday and fly out at 11 p.m. the following Wednesday, you have 6 full safari days plus a partial arrival day. Almost everyone overestimates this. Count nights, not calendar days.
2. Is this trip about wildlife, romance, family, or photography? Wildlife-first travelers spend more nights in the Serengeti and pay for a private vehicle. Families need a slower pace, larger tents and shorter drive days. Honeymooners want bush dinners and Zanzibar. Photographers want a private vehicle, dawn starts and a longer stay per region. Same country, four different itineraries.
3. What time of year are you traveling? The migration is in the northern Serengeti in July–September, the southern plains in January–March, and the western corridor in May–June. Zanzibar rains hard in April and most of May. If your dates are fixed, the itinerary flexes around them — not the other way around.

Best 5-Day Tanzania Safari Itinerary
The 5-day trip is the shortest itinerary I'm willing to recommend, and it works — as long as you route it aggressively. It's the classic "core Northern Circuit" trip: Tarangire, Ngorongoro, and the central Serengeti, with a return flight from the Seronera airstrip to save a full day of driving.

Seven days is where a Tanzania safari properly opens up. You add an extra night in the Serengeti, which more than doubles what you actually see — the herds, a leopard sighting that develops over two afternoons, a river crossing you'd otherwise miss. This is the itinerary I recommend more often than any other for first-time visitors.

Ten days is our most-booked length, and for good reason. It's long enough to add real slack — a second Serengeti region, an extra Ngorongoro morning, or (most often) a proper Zanzibar finish. It's also short enough that most travelers can actually take the time off work.

Two full weeks is the dream length. You get every Northern Circuit park at a proper pace, a second Serengeti region, an extended Zanzibar stay, and enough flex days that a shifted flight or a slow crossing never becomes a crisis. If your calendar and budget allow, this is the trip.

Family itineraries need three tweaks: shorter drive days, larger family suites, and a longer overall length to give kids time to reset. The winning formula in 2026 is 8–10 days with an extra Ngorongoro morning and no more than 5–6 hours in the vehicle per day.

Photography itineraries are built around light, not distance. That means more nights per region, dawn and dusk drives, and — non-negotiably — a private vehicle so you can position for the shot without a stranger asking to head back for lunch.
The winning plan: 10 nights, 4 in the central Serengeti (predators, kopjes, big skies), 3 in the migration region (herds, crossings or calving), 2 at Ngorongoro (early-morning crater floor light), 1 in Tarangire (elephants under baobabs). Skip Zanzibar unless you're building a longer trip — the beach doesn't advance your wildlife portfolio.

Skip it only if your total trip is 7 nights or less (adding Zanzibar to a short trip forces you to shortchange either the safari or the beach) or if you're a hardcore wildlife traveler using every day for a second circuit like the Selous or Ruaha.
